MOODY TACKLES TUCSON
The Southwest Superchargers
most recent venue was Southwest International Raceway June 16.
We were a part of SIR's "Night of Fire and Thunder".
Southwest Supercharger qualifying began in the heat
of the afternoon as Jack Bartlett (r.e.d./Sweetwater, TX.)
fired his small block to a 7.87/173 opening shot. Jacob Penner

(r.e.d./Seminole, TX.) and Greg Powell (funster/Hobbs, NM)
paired next and the result was a spectacular 7.599/170 for
Penner and, after a .000 r.t., a 7.714/174 for Powell. Points
leader Julian Moody (r.e.d./El Paso, TX.) and Sue Stringer
(r.e.d./Alamogordo, NM) squared off next. Moody's 7.594/175
out-paced Sues 7.882/169. Newcomer Rocky Salcido met Buck
Woolen Jr. Salcido's '55 Chevy Pro Mod style pick-up made a
decent 8.526/158 against Buck Jr's altered 8.904/148. The
altereds of Mike Jones (Lubbock, TX.) and Mike McCoy (Pueblo,
CO.) produced opposite results. Jones' well sub-index and
officially ignored 7.459/183 vanished in light of McCoy's
trouble- plagued 14.039/83. Buck Woolen (r.e.d./Alamogordo,
NM) ran Bill Norman/Norman Bros (funster/Seminole, TX.). Buck
went 7.992/172 vs. Bills 7.771/169. Finally Gary Hill
(r.e.d./Truth or Consequences, NM) pushed his Mopar to a
7.713/171.
Q-2 commenced and the sun was still high in the sky
over Tucson. Julian Moody's second shot at the SIR quarter
mile produced a 7.580/172 alongside Jack Bartlett's 7.642/175.
Sue Stringer and Greg Powell developed a nice side-by-side
7.540/177 and 7.580/176 respectively. The father and son duo
of Buck Woolen and Buck Woolen Jr. shared the track next and
Dads 7.687/172 outran Jrs problematic 10.455/118. The "Voodoo
Child" altered of Mike Jones ran even farther under the SWSC
index, 7.430/182 vs. Rocky Salcido's 8.448/159. Gary Hill ran
an almost-perfect 7.609/173 alongside Jacob Penner's
7.513/181. The last two cars in qualifying were Mike McCoy
whose B-1 Mopar had gremlins and could only go 9.764/116 and
Bill Normans Fat Boys tuned Hemi, who crunched a crankshaft in
the lights 8.160/155. In spite of a new NHRA-approved engine
oil retention diaper, oil was still leaked onto the SIR
surface requiring a lengthy clean-up. Our apologies.
After a break during which the sun disappeared and
SIR presented its racers via a "parade lap" in front of the
estimated 3000 fans, Round 1 of SWSC eliminations staged up
around 9:30. #9 Rocky Salcido (substituted for the #8
qualified Norman Bros broken Hemi) happily pulled into the
lanes to run #1 Jacob Penner. Rocky's best run of the night
(8.361/161) couldn't stay with Penner's winning 7.725/147. #4
Greg Powell next fired to run #5 Jack Bartlett. Bartlett's
.011 red light surrendered a wonderful 7.609/174 to Powell's
superb 7.614/174. #2 Julian Moody and #7 Buck Woolen paired
and the result was another stellar 7.644 vs. 7.657 with Moody
winning with the slower e.t. #3 Gary Hill, our most recent
winner on the SWSC circuit for 2007 and #6 Sue Stringer were
the last pair in Rd 1. Sue advanced despite a dead cylinder
and an off-pace 8.264/164 when Hill went 7.358/156 against the
SWSC 7.60 index.

At
10:30 Rd 2 started with #1 Jacob Penner preparing to run #4
Powell. Penner advanced on a .000 r.t./7.472/181 thanks to
Powell's 7.641/174 but red light start. Sue Stringers wounded
8.08/167 was no match for Julian Moody's 7.816/143 and our
final was set.
#1 Jacob Penner came out to duel with #2 Julian
Moody around 11:30. Moody's .063 r.t. was second but only to
Penner's foul start. Julian Moody became the first repeat
winner or the SWSC 2007 season on a 7.690/164. Our warmest
congratulations to Moody and Team of El Paso.
Thanks and "kudos" to the staff of SIR. Excellent
traction despite track temps in excess of 130. We hope to
return in October with an even better show, if that's
possible.
