MOODY TOPS @ TEMPLE TEXAS

The SWSC began its 2007 season with an appearance at Temple Academy Dragway, Temple, Tx., March 10. This quaint track in East Texas had something the SWSC racers weren't accustomed to... AIR!  And TREES!. Ten racers showed  to take advantage of the conditions at Temple. Three were racers new to the SWSC. Paul Harris driving the Bockman Racing '23t. Kenneth Reierson's delightful little (140 w/b) slingshot, and the F&I '23t altered "Cantankerous".

Qualifying began for the SWSC at 5:00 p.m. and the altered "Cantankerous" was living up to its moniker. Equipped with a new stripped 6-71. the small-block refused even to turn over significantly, the first casualty of 2007. Garry Coufal (formerly of El Paso, now Ft. Worth) opened 2007 with his Chevy-powered dragster on a 6.62 vs. Sue Stringers fuel starved 8.26. Yeah, that's 1/8 mile. And the low-altitude SWSC index was 4.70.  Greg Powell ran a decent 4.96 (004  r.t.) beside Mike McCoy's  altered, 520.  Mike Jones (Voodoo Child alt) hung on for a sub index 4.63 against 2006 SWSC Points Champ Julian Moody's 5.67.  Bill Normans "Flashback" ran an excellent 4.69 with Paul Harris' 4.87.  Finally Ken Reierson's slingshot went a wall-to-wall never-straight 8.11.

Q-2 saw Reierson quicken up to a 5.56 vs.  Moody's super 4.72.  Coufals consistent 6.65 trailed Harris' 4.95.  Powell was shut off with a leak, but opponent McCoy went on to a 6.03.  Jones slowed to a 4.89.  Sue Stringer's mechanic failed to get her in after a 9.58 alongside Normans 5.77.

As the sun set and the air REALLY got good, the SWSC started Round 1 Elims.   Julian Moody and crew continued their winning ways by defeating #7 qualifier Ken Reierson's small-block slingshot 5.06 to 7.00.  Next up #4 Paul Harris took advantage of a 1/10 second hole shot to eliminate a quicker #5 Greg Powell 5.02 (.410 r.t.) to 4.91 (.524 r.t.).   The altereds of #3 Mike Jones and #6 Mike McCoy were next.   Jones took the stripe when McCoy "bulbed." Jones ran it out to 4.94/ 150.20 mph.  And our final pair (after a computer "faux pas") was Norman Bros/Fat Boys Racing hemi (5.24) over Garry Coufal (6.89).

As the SWSC racers prepared for round 2, the bleachers filled and the pits emptied.  First pair would be the mega-motor monsters of Mike Jones and Julian Moody.  Despite Jones' .453 r.t. holeshot, Julian out ran Mike 4.87 to 5.15.  The other half of the semis was Paul Harris (579 c.i.d.) vs. Bill Norman (434 Hemi).  Bill's valiant 4.88 (.486 r.t.) was no match for Harris/Bockman's 4.90 (429 r.t.).

All other eliminations were done at Temple Academy Dragway by the time finals of the SWSC came around.  Newcomer Paul Harris squared off with multi-year SWSC Points Champ Julian Moody/Henry "The Wizard" Keller.  The Bockman Racing 23T couldn't wait (foul) and produced another win for Moody, 4.73 (470 index) to Harris' 6.25 runner-up.

The SWSC wants to thank O'Reilly Auto Parts Temple and Wal-Mart 31st Street for hosting our display.  And all the staff of Temple Academy Dragway for inviting the SWSC.   Hope you enjoyed the show--we loved the place.

Hold on to your hats- The SWSC Traveling Horsepower Show next goes to Denton, Texas April 7!   We'll see you there!
