       POWELL "ALIENATES" SWSC IN ROSWELL

For the second time in as many weeks Greg Powell, Hobbs, NM, has come away with top honors in the Southwest Superchargers.

Area 51 Dragway in Roswell, NM hosted the SWSC July 22. Eleven blown behemoths turned out to gain a place in the 8-car field. And the results were memorable.

After patiently waiting for the sun to go lower in the sky, and take the mid-90 temps with it, qualifying began just before 8:00 pm. The small block equipped machines of Ray Stringer (Alamogordo, NM) and Greg Powell (Hobbs, NM) paired up to open the program. At the green Powell ran a nice 7.70/178. Ray produced a personal best 7.55/177. And away we go!
Don David's bantam (Odessa, Tx) exhibited a .001 r.t. coupled to a 7.54/186! Julian Moody's K-B (El Paso, Tx) ran 7.64/176. Sue Stringers big block (Alamogordo, NM) stumbled unmercifully, 11.00. Mike Jones 23t (Lubbock, Tx) displayed a 7.50/185 vs. Jacob Penner's dragsters (Seminole, Tx) too-quick-to-qualify 7.36/187. Mike McCoy (Pueblo, Co) went 7.98/177 along side the Alex Clement driven dragster of Gary Hill (Truth or Consequences, NM) which produced a 7.91/172. Lastly, Eddie Tidwell's small block (Andrews, Tx) ran a career-best 7.56/178.

The final qualifying opportunity for our SWSC racers began when Jacob Penner made a nice 7.77/179 with Greg Powell's 7.68/177 in the opposite lane. Richard Letourneau in Mike Aton's flopper racked up a career best 8.18/153 next to Don David's 7.96/129 (early 'chute). Tidwell captured the #1 position on the ladder with his 7.62/175. McCoy produced a 7.83/122 in lane 2. Ray Stringer stepped up slightly to 7.52/177 vs. Moody's 7.63/175. Mike Jones ran an officially ignored 7.45/184 (!) as Sue Stringers car runs marginally better, but not enough (bad mag). And Clements got Hills car in with a back-on-track 7.69/179.

Just before 11:00 pm our eight qualifiers fired up for Round #1 Eliminations. #1 Eddie Tidwell lined up with #8 Jacob Penner as first pair. Tidwell went a sub-index 7.52/173 and surrendered the pass to Penner's 7.54/161. #4 Don David next paired with #5 Greg Powell. David left before the tree, no time. Powell moved to the semis based on his 7.65/177. Mike McCoy (#9) got in the program in the #3 position to replace a broken Ray Stringer. McCoy ran #6 Mike Jones. Jones altered came out the winner 7.55/188 when McCoy went WAY under 7.34/179. The last pair was #2 Julian Moody vs. #7 Clements/Hill. Moody uncorked  a .006 r.t. and won with a slower 7.65/169 to Clements quicker 7.62/180. How close was that?

Rd #2 was initiated by #5 qualifier Greg Powell and #8 Jacob Penner. Powell moved to his second consecutive final when Penner "bulbed" by .008 sec. Powell made a 7.48/180. #2 Julian Moody ran #6 Mike Jones in the other half of the semis. In a double-breakout pass, Moody advanced to the final, his 7.55/176 less of an offense than Jones' 7.53/176.

The final round of the SWSC Race 4 of 2006 was nothing less than memorable, maybe even spectacular. Both drivers had great reaction times (a winning .018 vs. a losing .035) and both drivers NAILED the SWSC 7.60 index. Moody lost the pass with a 7.606 to Powell's winning 7.616! Margin of victory a scant .0069! Outrageous! Unreal! A MOST memorable event!

Our thanks to the SWSC fans of the City of Aliens, Roswell. We hope we've earned your attention and adulation. Come see us again at Area 51 Dragway October 14!
