MOODY MANGLES EIGHTH MILE AT MIDLAND
The Southwest Superchargers most
recent challenge was Desert Thunder Raceway, Midland, Tx. This
one-year-old eighth mile facility west of town is unique in a
couple of aspects.....walled-in racing surface and uphill
shut-down. Both great from a safety stand point.
Only eight SWSC cars could answer the call to attend
Sept 24. Mike Jones altered was #1 qualifier (4.83 on the 4.80
index) but broke a trans input in Q2. Greg Powell's funster ran a
couple of nice ones, 4.91 and 4.84. Jack Bartlett managed a 4.87
after his initial 5.89. Alex Clements broke the rear end in Gary
Hills Quick thrill dragster. Bill Norman in the "Flashback"
funster recorded times of 4.86 and 4.73. Both of Eddie Tidwell's
(Andrews, Tx.) runs were sub-index (4.68-4.75). Likewise Pueblo,
Co. resident Mike McCoy (4.63-4.64). Julian Moody's monster
dragster ran 5.09 and 4.95.
With two cars broken, Rd 1 would have only 6
competitors. #4 Bill Norman first appeared to run #5 Jack
Bartlett. The Hemi-powered funster of the Fabulous Fat Boys and
the Norman Bros advanced on a nice 4.86/130. Next #6 Julian Moody
challenged current points leader and #3 qualifier Greg Powell.
Both cars ran right on the index but Moody came out on top
4.81/143 to Powell's 4.84/137. The final match-up in Rd 1 was #2
McCoy vs. #7 Eddie Tidwell. Tidwell again ran under the index ever
so slightly (4.79/143) and McCoy's B-1 went to Rd 2 on a 4.83/131.
On SWSC rules, the quickest loser of Rd 1 was reinstated
to Rd 2 for a full round of four cars. Eddie Tidwell's Chevy small
block ran into Norman Bros Hemi. When the dust cleared
(figuratively) Tidwell had again broken out (4.75/144) and Bill
Norman went to the final on his 4.83/129. The other half of the
semis was another Chevy Chrysler duel, Moody vs. McCoy. McCoy's
altered struggled to a 5.42/106 and Moody and team ran 4.92/121 to
advance.
The final two competitors, both Texas residents,
prepared to do the final battle of the evening. Julian Moody's
"Pipeliner" with "The Wizard" Henry Keller at the wrenches took
the win with a 4.85 to Bill Normans red-light initiated 5.26.
Well done, all, some nice runs and some close racing on
the index.
Thanks to Hooters of Midland/Odessa for their
hospitality.
Hey, SWSC race fans, if you really love your SWSC racers
