LARGEST CROWD
EVER ATTENDS 2008 SWSC SEASON OPENER!
Midland, TX April 26
Hello SWSC
Race Fans! Welcome back to Southwest
Superchargers drag racing for 2008. We have a
firm 10-race schedule for this season and it's
going to be spectacular! Let's get started.
The Desert
Thunder Raceway eighth-mile surface was prepped
like a national event venue...the track didn't
just have teeth, it bit like Velcro! Gary Hills
Mopar-powered rail did a wheel stand like he had
never seen. Three SWSC racers ran sub-index
times off the trailer at this the first race of
the young season. And no one went onto "the
beach".
In Round
One Qualifying twelve blower activists were
ready to make attempts to be Top Qualifier.
Jack Bartlett's Chevy small block powered rail
ran a nice 4.948. Don David's Odessa-based
Bantam altered went 4.904. Paul Harris' Bockman
Racing '23T made a sub-index 4.794 (4.80 index).
Jack and Amy Chapman's "Hoopie" 23T sashayed to
an out-of-character 9.292. Gary Hills
afore-mentioned wheelie yielded 4.721,
sub-index. Andy Mears (Banzai Racing, Lubbock)
ran 5.133. SWSC 2007 Points Champion Julian
Moody (El Paso) made a 4.751. Jacob Penner's
big-block broke a valve on the burn-out. LH
Newlins 23T "Kantankerous" with its new big
block had a bad start and showed an off pace
6.231. Sue Stringers newly skinned and freshly
painted dragster ran 5.244. Greg Powell's small
block funster ran a great 4.861. Lastly, Ray
Stringers iron mouse produced a 4.940.
The final
qualifier began with Bartlett improving to 4.806
vs. Greg Powell's 4.928. Paul Harris struggled
to 5.341 against Sues 5.498. Julian Moody's
4.803 was "primo" beside Jack Chapman's 4.910.
Gary Hill slowed to 5.055 vs. Andy Mears
officially ignored 4.694 (all runs more than
1/10 sec sub-index are disqualified). Ray
Stringer also improved slightly 4.915 as Don
David's Bantam picked up to a 4.733.
SWSC
Eliminations kicked off with the biggest crowd
in SWSC history hanging on the fences and
crowding the bleachers. #1 Julian Moody got a
"bye" in Rd 1 due to our 11-car field and made a
great 4.790 @ 144. #2 Paul Harris lost to a
surprising pass by the #11 "Kantankerous", a
stellar 4.840 to 5.113. #3 Jack Bartletts 4.926
easily outran #10 Sue Stringers soft 5.299. #8
Ray Stringer advanced over #5 Don David 4.852 vs
5.150 @ 145. #7 Jack Chapman won with a 4.951
when #6 Gary Hill ran sub-index 4.775. And #4
Greg Powell went to Rd 2 by virtue of a 4.911
when #9 Andy Mears ran under 4.723 @ 149 mph.
Rd 2 began
with #3 Jack Bartlett taking a hole-shot win
over #1 Julian Moody 4.883 (.067 rt) to 4.847
(.083 rt). Next a resurgent #11 LH and Francis
Newlin outran #4 Greg Powell narrowly 4.866 to
4.884. Ray Stringer advanced at the expense of
Jack Chapman 4.809 vs. 4.981.
By SWSC
rules, any up-coming round with an odd number of
cars will be supplemented by the quickest loser
from the previous round.
So it was
that #1 Julian Moody came to run #8 Ray Stringer
in the semis. Moody moved on to the final by
defeating Ray 4.830 to 4.904. The other half of
the final was decided when Jack Bartlett
outpaced
a
drifting LH Newlin 4.897 to 8.358.
Around
midnight the temp had dropped significantly and
the humidity had increased by 40%. Julian Moody
and Team continued their winning ways by using
an .045 rt to out strip Jack Bartlett 4.931 to
Jacks 4.936. What a pass!
And what a
race! Stay with us as the Southwest
Superchargers travel to Wichita Falls, TX. May
10. We'll see you there!
