MOODY CLINCHES CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 6TH WIN    OF   2008

For the seventh time in 2008, the Southwest Superchargers staged one of their patented heads-up all-supercharged drag shows. Eleven pressurized performers made the haul to Desert Thunder Raceway in Midland September 5.

Timed Qualifications got under way as L.H Newlin's big block altered drew up alongside Greg Powell's small block funster. Newlin's 5.0971/135 was over shadowed by Powell's "primo" 4.8158/144. (4.80 index!). Gary Hills Max Wedge Mopar ran a sub-index 4.7265/145 as Jacob Penner's big block went 4.7567/149 in Lane 2. Nice side-by-side. Jack Bartlett went 4.9462/141 vs. Don David's soft 7.5598/136. Newcomer Chad Ringener's all-steel '68 Chevelle 498 cid displayed a 5.5618/126 as Andy Mears big block ran 5.1736/136. Julian Moody's 4.6808/148 was ignored per SWSC rules. And Bill Normans Hemi ran a nice 4.7827/146.

Q-2 saw L.H Newlin bow out with a contaminated supercharger. Penner repeated 4.7586/150. Powell slowed with a 4.9954/137. Hill improved 4.7382/144. David also stepped up with his 5.1356/126. Ringener tuned up to a 5.6980/127. Norman went quicker 4.7502/146. Moody got i9n the program on his 4.7478/146. And Bartlett ran 4.8838/142.

          Prior to Rd 1 Elims the Southwest Supercharger ladder assembled so...#1 Greg Powell (4.8158), #2 Bill Norman (4.7827), #3 Jacob Penner (4.7586), #4 Julian Moody (4.7478), $5 Gary Hill (4.7382), #6 Jack Bartlett (4.8838), #7 Andy Mears (5.0591), #8 L.H Newlin (5.0971), #9 Don David (5.1356), #10 Chad Ringener (5.5618).

First pair out in Rd 1 was #4 Julian Moody (El Paso) vs. #5 Gary Hill (T or C). Gary got no time (trans brake failure) and allowed Julian an easy 4.8715/143 win. Next up #3 Jacob Penner (Seminole) surrendered to #6 Jack Bartlett (Sweetwater) when Jacobs sub index 4.7647/138 lost to Jacks 5.3169/139. #7 Andy Mears (Lubbock) took a 4.8876/138 win over #2 Bill Normans (Seminole) too-quick 4.7395/146. #9 Don David (alternate, Odessa) got a win light over #1 Greg Powell (Hobbs) when Powell's small block "sneezed" in the burnout.

The semi-final happened around midnight when Don David's altered and Julian Moody's dragster began their ritualistic burn out dance. Just a side-bar here....reminds you of two big horn sheep butting heads then backing off showing each other their horns, right? In a spectacularly close race Moody came out on top 4.8695/133 to Dons 4.9184/144. Next Andy Mears used a .016 r.t. with his 4.9944/139 to take out Jack Bartlett's .032/5.2106/139.

The SWSC final consisted of the same two race cars as our Denton race, Andy Mears vs Julian Moody. Mears improved 4.8858/145 but still couldn't quite catch Julian's 4.8741/130.

Once again Julian "Mr. Icewater" Moody and Henry "The Wizard" Keller take the accolades, the trophy and the money. What's next, 9 out of 10? Stay tuned, 'cause you can bet that's the goal!

Next up Abilene Dragway Sep 13. Check out the schedule, and rumors for more new races in 2009!

Good Job, Nice Pass, and Welcome to Chad Ringener, '68 Chevelle. See you in Abilene.

Special "tummy thanks" to Henry "Red Chili" Keller for the SWSC wide feed. Who knew you were so multi-talented? Extra welcome late in the evening.

          And away we go!
