HILL HAMMERS HOBBS
The Southwest Superchargers just returned from Race
4 of 2007 held at Hobbs Motorsports Park in Hobbs, New Mexico
May 26-27.
For just the third time in SWSC history the regular
date of May 26 was rained out on Saturday afternoon after only
one qualifying run. Since the track already had a race
scheduled for the next day, the SWSC joined the program for
Sunday.
In Saturdays Q-1, Mike McCoy (Pueblo/alt) struggled
to 8.25/123. Bill Norman/Norman Bros (funster/Seminole) made a
nice 7.839/177. Jacob Penner had fuel system gremlins

8.28/180. Eddie Tidwell (Andrews/sbc) ran a sub 7.52/178. Buck
Woolen (r.e.d./Alamogordo) displayed a 7.92/169. Jack
Chapman's '23 Aero T (Lubbock) went 8.47/163. Newcomer Mitch
"Wild Man" Muse (sbc/alt) worked for a 10.18/86. Greg Powell
(Hobbs/funster) made a 7.99/169. Ray Stringer (sbc/Alamogordo)
ran a great 7.65/174. Points Champ Julian Moody (El
Paso/r.e.d.) made a nice 7.67/172. L.H. Newlin (alt/Ft Worth)
burned a piston on a 9.25/125. After a 6-month repair on his
Mopar, Gary Hill (T or C/r.e.d.) ran a decent 7.77/172. Sue
Stringers car (b.b.c/Alamogordo) choked a fuel system on a
9.58/87. But Mike Jones (alt/Lubbock) was the #1 Qualifier
with his 7.61/185.
Q-2 on Sunday morning was the last opportunity to
get onto the qualified 8-car field. Gary

Hill
stepped up significantly, 7.50/178. Eddie Tidwell got closer
to the index, 7.54/177. Jacob Penner became the new #1
Qualifier, 7.58/181. Ray Stringer trimmed his e.t., 7.63/176.
The Fat Boys squeezed more out of the Norman Bros "Flashback",
7.65/181. Mike McCoy stepped up big time, 7.88/169. Sue
Stringer clicked it early and still ran a 7.92/144. Mitch Muse
improved with his 8.84/151. Buck Woolen Jr. went 8.18/168. And
Moody's ignition box died just off the line, 18.40/59. Two
cars didn't return for Sunday, Mike Jones and Jack Chapman.
Round #1 Eliminations started with #1 Jacob Penner
racing #8 Buck Woolen Jr. Penner's car shook hard and Buck
advanced to Rd 2 with an 8.06 to 8.30 victory. #7 Mike McCoy
next ran #2 Ray Stringer and McCoy won on a holes hot 7.75 to
7.71 (.043 to .091 rts). #5 Julian Moody won over #4 Eddie
Tidwell when Tidwell's trans gave up low gear, 7.69 to 9.78.
In the final pair Gary Hill won the SMC Drivers Bounty on Bill
Norman by beating Bill and the Fat Boys in r.t. .041 to .119
and won the pass 7.74 to an incredibly close 7.75.
Rd 2 saw #8 Buck Woolen in his first semi vs. #7
Moody. Buck Woolen came out on top (7.88/168) when Julian ran
under the SWSC index, 7.57/157. The Mega Mopars of #6 Gary
Hill and #7 Mike McCoy next ran and Hill ran a perfect 7.606
to eke out a narrow victory over McCoy's fabulous 7.615!
The final SWSC pair featured a resurgent Gary Hill
(Max Wedge Mopar) on the mend after a catastrophic engine
failure at the final event of 2006. Buck Woolen Jr. was coming
to his

first ever final in his first time in the SWSC
qualified field. Buck Jr. had a stellar .037 light but Hill
was primed, .044. Hills 7.61 overshadowed Bucks 7.80 for the
win!
Congratulations to Gary Hill on a stellar performance. First
time out with his repaired combo to win the race!
Also congrats
to the Woolen family and Buck Woolen Jr. on their great final
round appearance!

The
SMC Driver Bounty is now on Gary Hill.
No one has yet had a perfect pass but the
closest-to-index records are being kept.
The SWSC next travels to Southwest International
Raceway, Tucson June 16! Watch for changes in the SWSC
schedule-more races may be coming!
Best e.t. 7.606 Gary Hill
