MOODY & TEAM REPEAT CHAMPS
The Southwest Superchargers
final race of 2006 went off without a hitch October 20 at Hobbs
Motorsports Park, Hobbs, N.M. Nine SWSC regulars appeared for
their final attempt to climb the points ladder. And, more
importantly, the points championship was still up for grabs
between the two top teams. Greg Powell, Hobbs, NM held a narrow
lead over 2005 SWSC Points Champ Julian Moody, El Paso, TX.
going into Saturdays race.
Changing to an early format to avoid early evening
temperature drops and dew on the racing surface, qualifying for
our SWSC teams cranked up about 11:00 am. Greg Powell's funster
and Sue Stringers dragster went off first and produced a 7.57
for Powell and a disappointing 8.81 for Sue. Next up Jacob
Penner, Seminole, TX dragster went 7.53 vs. Bill Normans
funster which ran an officially ignored 7.48. All runs more than
1/10 sec under the SWSC index of 7.60 are disqualified. Julian
Moody ran a nice 7.73 as Gary Hill went 7.42 in the other lane.
The altereds of Mike McCoy (Pueblo, CO.) and Don David (Odessa,
TX.) paired up to go 7.84 (McCoy) and 7.53 (David) respectively.
The last pass in Q-1 was the flopper of Richard Letourneau and
Mike Aton, Artesia, NM., 8.57/164.

Q-2 was the final opportunity of 2006 for our teams to
compete with the SWSC. Powell slowed slightly, 7.58. Stringer
finally produced a competitive pass, 7.89. Moody stayed in the
hunt, 7.58. Hill duplicated Moody's pass for side-by-side 7.58s.
The altereds again went off together with McCoy's 7.56 ahead of
David's 8.21. Letourneau again made a bye, 8.46. Penner's 7.59
got in where Normans 7.47 did not.
The final elimination rounds of 2006
for the SWSC began as #4 Greg Powell and #5
Mike
McCoy pulled up to the line, a must-win for Powell to stay on
top of the points chase. McCoy's 'chute fell out just past 60'
slowing him to a 7.98 vs. Powell's winning 7.72. #3 Moody and #6
Don David next came through to run. David's short wheelbase car
darted right resulting in the win for Moody, 7.74 to 8.19. #2
Gary Hill exploded a Keith Black block in his burnout against #7
Sue Stringer, giving her a single 8.00. After that bye it was
learned that #9 Norman Bros should have been installed as
alternate in the previous run. Our apologies to the Fat Boys/
Norman Bros team. #8 Richard Letourneau lastly squared off with
#1 Jacob Penner. Letourneau stepped up to 8.21 but couldn't
match Penner's 8.06.
The semi-final round was initiated when Julian Moody
and Sue Stringer donned their racing attire and buckled up.
Moody advanced on a 7.72 to Sues 8.04. Then the pressure was

on
Greg Powell in his pass vs. Jacob Penner. Powell needed to go to
the final to clinch the title. But Powell's red-light stopped
the points chase and a double break out race resulted, Powell's
7.57 to Penner's 7.55.
So with the war over, the battle resumes in the final.
As our two contestants launch, Moody's red light nullifies his
perfect 7.60 run on the SWSC 7.60 index and Jacob Penner takes
the final win light of 2006 for the Southwest Superchargers.
The SWSC wishes to thank Salopeck 6u Pecans, Las Cruces
