MOODY & TEAM STRIKE AGAIN
The Southwest
Superchargers latest venture
out was to North Star
Dragway August 16 in Denton,
TX. and Julian Moody and
Henry Keller and Team came
out on top of the twelve car
field for the fifth time in
the 2008 season.
After more than a
few anxious moments watching
the weather forecast earlier
in the week,
SWSC qualifying started
during pretty decent weather
around 6:00 pm. Right out of
the box Mike Jones altered
crossed the centerline
completely into Julian
Moody's lane but fortunately
behind so no contact was
made. Don David's time slip
was blank in Q-1. Andy Mears
"Banzai" digger went sub
index on his opening run
4.6255/152. Jack and Amy
Chapman's "Hoopie" roadster
went an uncharacteristically
soft 5.3787/128. Greg
Powell's funster small block
ran 5.0077/137. The dragster
of "Our Gang" put up a
5.0316/138. Frank Sharon's
altered ran 5.3933/135.
Julian Moody's "Pipeliner"
went sub index (not
unexpectedly) 4.6107/149.
Jacob Penner's "Just For
Kicks" car went 4.6026/152.
Sue Stringers "Twisted
Sister" car made a great
4.7279/141. Paul Harris'
altered showed 4.8887/150.
And L.H. & Francis Newlin's
"Cantankerous" made a nice
4.8140/ 147.
In Q-2 Mike Jones
car stayed in its own lane
4.7368/150. Paul Harris
improved to a "#1"
4.7195/154. L.H. Newlin
went 4.8111/145...again.
Greg Powell stepped up
nicely 4.6511/148. Sue
Stringers car surrendered a
ring and pinion to the super
bite of the North Star
Dragway surface. Jack
Chapman
improved marginally 5.3317/
129. Andy Mears closed in on
the SWSC 4.70 index with his
4.6720/153. Jacob Penner got
better 4.6368.152. Don
David's best was 5.7119/134.
Garritson and the "Our Gang"
slowed with a broken lifter.
Frank Sharon got better with
his 5.2604/ 137. And Julian
Moody's best run was
4.7361/147.
When the numbers
were sufficiently crunched
the SWSC Qualifying Sheet
looked like this: #1 Paul
Harris #2 Sue Stringer #3
Andy Mears #4 Julian Moody
#5 Mike Jones #6 Greg
Powell #7 Jacob Penner #8
L.H. Newlin #9 Frank
Sharon #10 Jack Chapman
#11 Don David #12 "Our
Gang". But with #2 Sue
Stringer and #12 "Our Gang"
broken the ladder would get
adjusted to eliminate byes
in Rd 1 Competition.
Around 8:30
Eliminations began with #4
Mike Jones suiting up
against #6 Greg Powell.
Jones car began to
"porpoise" badly but Powell
was already gone...to a
too-quick 4.6661/141 sub
pass giving
Mikes soft 7.9177/122 the
win. Next #5 Penner met #8
Newlin. Newlin's 4.8158/146
won when Penner's car ran a
sub 4.6559/149. #9 Frank
Sharon lost to #4 Julian
Moody 6.7387/70 to
4.7727/127. #10 Chapman's
5.3584/129 was no match for
#3 Andy Mears 4.8498/121.
Finally #11 Don David's
foul-initiated 6.4874/74
trailed #1 Paul Harris'
winning 4.5702/155.
In Q-2 Greg Powell
was reinstated as quick
alternate from Rd 1 to run
Paul Harris. Greg's red
light start negated his
4.9492/138 vs. Harris'
6.5358/65 win. Julian Moody
won with a 4.7429/135
against Mike Jones
4.8042/152. Andy Mears got a
bye and ran 4.6940/152 when
L.H.'s altered had
mechanical gremlins
eliminating his car from
competition.
Mike Jones was
inserted to fill the ladder
for the semis but his decent
4.8300/142 lost to Lubbock
neighbor Andy Mears top
shelf 4.7032/140. Julian
Moody moved to the final
with a soft 4.9469/110 when
Paul Harris altered wheelied
and broke a front suspension
on landing. Harris guided
the car to a safe and
one-lane stop...Good Job!
Andy Mears of
Mears Mazda Lubbock had put
up a $100 bounty on Julian
Moody at the beginning of
the race but up to now no
one had been able to
collect. Now it was up to
Mears himself. But it was
not to be as Moody & Co's
4.7204/147 and .010 rt
out-paced Mears 4.6201/153
and -.015 rt by SWSC
standards all the way to the
stripe.

Kudos to DJ, Anne-Marie,
Henry, and Julian on their
unprecedented fifth win of
2008!
