JONES CLEANS UP @ SWSC SEASON CLOSER

The Southwest Superchargers held their 2008 season-ending event Nov 1 at Lone Star Dragway in Denton, TX. The "Voodoo Child" altered of Mike Jones (Lubbock, Tx) took home top honors.

Eleven SWSC faithful showed for the all-run field. Qualifying for the 4.70 index 1/8 mile commenced as Don David (bantam altered) ran a nice 4.6899/149. Bill Norman (funster) went 5.0585/122. Jacob Penner's dragster showed a decent 4.7289/151. Andy Mears (dragster) made a 4.7346/149. Sue Stringer (R.E.D.) ran 5.3087/131. Chris Stoffer went 5.3291/95 on the maiden voyage in Carl Meador's new slingshot. Jack Bartlett (R.E.D.) got a 4.6968/147 time slip. L.H Newlin (altered) limped to a 6.1930/96. Greg Powell showed a 4.5850/150 on the scoreboard. Ken Ryerson's stubby (but beautiful) slingshot ran 5.9374/129. And Mike Jones altered went 4.9654/150 out of the box.

In Rd 2 Qualifying Sue Stringer improved by 1/10 sec or so after her best 60' ever (1.06). Don David got closer to the index with his spectacular 4.7090/150. Bartlett slowed vs. Q-1, 4.8223/147. Likewise Powell's funster, 4.9468/137. Stoffer stepped up with his 5.1214/139. Reierson also improved, 5.5507/141.

Eliminations kicked off with #1 Jack Bartlett taking a bye run (11 car field) to a nice 4.7112/147. Next #6 Mike Jones garnered a win on a competition bye (#7 Bill Norman/Norman Bros/Fat Boys Racing no-show) with his 4.6919/152. #2 Andy Mears met #11 L.H Newlin and Mears advanced 4.7549/139 vs 4.8924/149. #3 Jacob Penner won with his 4.7577/133 over #10 Ken Ryerson's 5.4116/141. #4 Don David met #9 Sue Stringer in Rd 1 and David took the win 4.8656/125 over Sues puny 9.2558. Finally #5 Greg Powell advanced when Chris Stoffer's ride broke after the burn out, 4.8237/126.

Elim. Rd 2 saw Don David's altered succumb to Jacob Penner, 4.7053/151 to 4.9887/145. Greg Powell advanced by virtue of his 4.8845/140 when Andy Mears bulbed and went sub-index 4.6867/149. Mike Jones took a soft win (4.9075/149) because Jack Bartlett ran under 4.6883/147.

In the semi-final round, Jack Bartlett was reinstated as Quick Alternate to fill out the field per SWSC rules. But he just as quickly fell away with his 4.9558/147 surrendering to Greg Powell's winning 4.8064/147. Mike Jones went to the SWSC final courtesy of Jacob Penner's .395 r.t. and 4.6602/143 e.t. to Jones 5.0628/134.

The Southwest Supercharger Final Final of 2008 was #5 Greg Powell vs. #6 Mike Jones. Powell's third consecutive final yielded a runner-up finish on his 4.80 e.t. opposite Jones superior 4.72 on the 4.70 index. A great side-by-side SWSC final...and a first win for Mike Jones! Congrats, Nice Job!

The SWSC 2008 Season comes to a close after a spectacular 10-race series ranging from Denton, TX on the eastern edge of our range to Tucson, AZ on the western side. Only one rain out (Midland #2) and one postponement due to Hurricane Ike (Abilene #2). And the points shuffled at Race 10 Denton. Greg Powell secured #2 Points position just by making a qualifying pass. And Mike Jones moved from #6 to #4 by winning the last event, jumping over Sue Stringer and Andy Mears, squeezing him out of the Top 5 by ONE POINT!

Julian Moody won the SWSC 2008 Championship for an outrageous fifth straight year. By winning seven out of ten races, Moody and Team were virtually unreachable by Race 8 Tucson/SIR. Way Cool!

Thanks for staying with us through 2008. We hope you enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed doing it. Stick around, 8. to 10 race dates are already shaping up for the SWSC in 2009, including Hobbs, Albuquerque and El Paso!
