Moody and
Team Trips Up
Hello,
Southwest Superchargers race fans! Thanks
for joining us again here at SWSC.com. We of
the SWSC have just returned from our third
foray of 2008 to the New Amarillo Dragway,
Amarillo, TX. For this history-filled track
the SWSC had eleven pressurized racers show
to vie for a position in the 8-car field.
Qualifying Rd 1 started with temps in the
90's, clear skies and mild breezes. On a
7.60 index, "Quick Thrill" Gary Hill kicked
off his day with a 7.82/169. Points leader
"Pipeliner" Julian Moody went an
uncharacteristically soft 7.93/167. Don
David's Bantam altered ran 7.94/176. The
"Cantankerous" team of L.H. and Francis
Newlin's spun on a 8.04/150 effort. "Voodoo
Child" Mike Jones went 7.68/179. "Flashback"
Bill Norman and the Fabulous Fat Boys made a
7.83/178. "Twisted Sister Racing" Sue
Stringer ran a 7.90/163 in the heat of the
day. Buck Woolens dragster mustered a
7.94/171. "The Gregger" Greg Powell's
funster went 8.01/167. Ray Stringers rail
produced a wounded 8.14/167. "Just For
Kicks" Jacob Penner was the top of
qualifying with his 7.66/178.
But
things were to change significantly in Q2.
Weather conditions had changed only
marginally when Don David's altered stepped
up with a 7.73/178. Penner slowed to a 8.07.
Sue made the field on her 7.65/171. LH's 23t
went 8.03/160. Powell improved to 7.78/172.
Likewise Hill's 7.74/170. Moody & Co. ran a
nice 7.64/171. Woolen found a tenth,
7.82/169. Norman & Team went a better
7.76/178. But Jones was "Numero Uno" on his
7.63/178.
After
the sun had set and the temp had dropped 10
degrees or more the SWSC began Eliminations.
#4 Jacob Penner vs. #5 Don David ran first.
David's Bantam moved to the next round on
his 7.99/175 against Penner's lackluster
8.01/165. Next #2 Julian Moody lined up
against #7 Bill Norman. Normans razor-thin
-.008 r.t. negated his 7.68/175 as Moody's
7.62/173 advanced him to Rd 2. #3 Sue
Stringer and #6 Gary Hill were next up.
Gary's excellent 7.61/169 held off Sues nice
7.63/166 (margin of victory .017). When #8
Greg Powell prepared to race #1 Mike Jones
we had no idea how close it could get. Jones
altered won the pass with a 7.6927, but it
was THIS CLOSE as Powell's funster ran a
7.6950 in the other lane! Six out of eight
cars in Rd1 ran in the 7.60's!
The
Semi-final Round of the SWSC commenced with
#2 Moody meeting #6 Hill. After a double
break out match-up Moody got the win light,
his 7.57/174 being closer to index
than Hills 7.54/165. #1 Mike Jones & #5 Don
David were up next to see who would advance
to the SWSC final. David's slowing 7.91/178
fell to Jones better 7.76/150.
During
the intermission before the Final, Mike
Jones "Voodoo Child" was found to be wounded
beyond immediate repair so Gary Hill was
reinstated to run the final against Moody.
Moody's stellar .005 r.t. got another SWSC
victory when both cars again ran under
index, Hills 7.48/169 surrendering to
Moody's less flagrant 7.54/171.
For
possibly the first time in Southwest
Superchargers history the same car/driver
has won three races in a row (hence the
headline). Julian Moody/Henry "The
Wizard" Keller & Team took home the trophy
in convincing fashion. Great job, Guys!
(Where is that funny? And when are you
gonna retire that dragster?)
That's
it from Amarillo! Stay in touch as we take a
4-week break and prep to go back to Desert
Thunder Raceway in Midland, TX. We'll see
you there June 28!
And Thanks to Norm, Phillip, and the Crew at
the New Amarillo Dragway. Hope to see you
again!
