POWELL POUNDS SWSC IN ABILENE
Race #9 for the Southwest Superchargers in 2008 was contested October 11 at Abilene Dragstrip, Abilene, TX. Ten windmill warriors attended to battle for the points.
Abilene management had it in mind to be done for the day before last Springs 3:00 am finish. Accordingly the first qualifying pass for the SWSC was 2:00 pm. Points leader (and soon-to-be-crowned 2008 Points Champion) Julian Moody laid down a great 4.7288/147 vs. Greg Powell's 4.6279/148. Next
Sue Stringer struggled to a 5.6101/110 against Andy Mears 4.8243/146. Mike Jones went 4.9025/143 alongside L.H Newlin's 5.0746/134. Don David ran 4.9175/144 with Jack Chapman's nearly identical 4.9275/144. Jacob Penner displayed 4.6733/151 against Bill Normans "right-on" 4.7062/148.
3:15 pm saw Q-2 begin for our traveling speed show with Powell/Moody. Moody improved (closer to the 4.70 index) with his 4.6876/146 vs. Powell's like-wise 4.6667/146. Wadda ya want? Side by side heads up supercharged drag racing? We deliver! Sues 6.2488 106 (ignition gremlins) was no match for
Andy Mears 4.8184/146. Chapman's 4.9658/141 narrowly led Newlin's 4.9794/137. Seminole, Tx neighbors Jacob Penner and Norman Bros/Fat Boys BOTH went 4.68 (4.6878/151 and 4.6809/149). Finally Don David's 4.8446/145 out-stretched Mike Jones' 4.9230/126.
Round #1 Eliminations for the SWSC began as #4 Greg Powell met #5 Andy Mears. Mears early leave (.-039rt) and 4.7508/146 surrendered to Powell's near-perfect 4.7048/145. Next #3 Julian Moody met #6 Don David. Moody's 4.7991/135 out ran Dons 4.8589/144. Pair 3 was #2 Jacob Penner vs. #7 Mike Jones. Jones' 4.8164/152 couldn't keep up with Penner's 4.7716/140. Lastly #1 Bill Norman ran #8 Jack Chapman. Chapman's loose 5.5520/87 won after Bill fouled away a superior 4.7134/144.
The SWSC semi-final round saw Jack Chapman's red light-initiated sub-index 4.6772/151 give way to Greg Powell's nice 4.7253/144. The winner of the Penner/Moody match-up would go to the final against Greg. Another close race ensued with Moody coming out on top .0458/4.7734/145 vs. Penner's .0800/4.7486/149.
In the final Julian Moody's off-pace 4.7880/146 fell to Greg Powell's better 4.7255/143. Congratulations to Team GPR!
